Their low murmuring and the murmuring of the gales through the lone tree on the mountaintop were his main companions. Day upon day, looking out for his charges inculcated in him a sense of quiet fulfillment.
However, there were occasional moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would long for company. On one such day because of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy orchestrated a troublesome scheme.
Stories of wild beasts hunting on sheep had long been circulating in the hamlet. So, the boy opted to exploit this fear and played a trick on the villagers.
One morning he raced into the village screaming “Wolf! A wolf is preying on my sheep!” The scared villagers sprinted up the hills to offer assistance but found no beast.
The boy chuckled at the confusion on their faces. This prank continued for a few more days. But, one day, a real wolf actually come to prey the herd. The shepherd boy dashed for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but could protect only few of his sheep. Devastated, he returned to the village only to receive a reprimand on honesty and the repercussions of dishonesty.
The tale of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the perils of crying wolf.
